About Cyndi O’Meara
Cyndi O’Meara is a nutritionist and is the filmmaker of ‘What’s With Wheat?’ She is also a best-selling author, international speaker and the founder of Changing Habits.
Nutritionist Ahead Of Her Time…
Cyndi graduated with a BSc majoring in Nutrition from Deakin University in 1984, her special interest was ancestral foods. At the end of her degree, she was so disillusioned by the nutritional guidelines that she paved her own path and stayed clear of the low-fat diets of the day, and not without controversy.
Her groundbreaking book Changing Habits Changing Lives (1998) became an instant best seller and from there she has grown a successful organic food company, certified online education program and spearheaded a soon-to-be-historic documentary.
Cyndi is about educating, her greatest love is to teach people, in order for them to make better choices in their life, so they too can enjoy greater health throughout their life. Her unique, surprisingly simple and down-to-earth approach challenges and encourage others to eliminate unhealthy habits and has inspired thousands to make smarter choices about the food they choose to put into their body.

Cyndi is a member of the largest hemophilic family in the world, originating in Iowa, USA. Six of her mother’s brothers and sisters had the condition, while another sister was a carrier. Tragically, most of them died young, although it was not the disorder that killed them. Instead, they were treated with blood infected with the HIV virus, which caused them to contract AIDS and eventually die.
Cyndi’s family has had more than its fair share of illness, thanks partly to the hemophilia, and subsequent generations suffered from autoimmune diseases, cancer, hepatitis, brain hematoma, leukemia, diabetes, and hemophilia. The autoimmune disease CREST unfortunately took the life of Cyndi’s beloved sister Lisa at the age of 46.
Chemicals, Food & Health
There was no history of hemophilia in Cyndi’s family until the 1930s. This was a time when farmers started using chemicals to control pests, disease, and weeds across the United States, including the corn fields of Iowa, where her family lived and worked. At that time large-scale spraying of chemicals like DDT and arsenic were common. These toxic substances have since been linked to a range of health conditions, including the possible mutation of the gene for hemophilia.
Cyndi’s family history drove her to understand the connection between chemicals, food and the environment triggers that affect a person’s health, as well as how people can improve their health by making dietary changes. After studying nutrition and vitalism, she believes that the body has the ability to heal itself given the right conditions.
Cyndi’s Health Journey
While Cyndi has never taken an antibiotic or any form of medication in her 56 years and neither have her children who are now in their 20’s, as she reached the age of 50, her health took a troubling turn. At this pivotal time in her life, Cyndi found herself experiencing the so-called normal artifacts of aging, including anxiety, weight gain, sore back, hip pain, aching joints, foggy brain, dry skin, brittle hair and digestive bloating. She began to question her own dietary and health advice.
Cyndi decided to do an elimination diet, a very strict regime only eating small amounts of lean meat, green vegetables and berries. Within three weeks, she had lost 18lb in weight, all her aches and pains had gone and she had absolute clarity of mind. She felt twenty years younger.
Over the pursuing weeks, she started to introduce various foods back into her daily eating. The day she introduced wheat there was a profound and significant, almost instant change. She gained 2lb in weight, the aches and pains returned, her mind became cloudy and her health felt like it had declined overnight. This is what sent her on a quest of research and interviewing global experts to find answers.
