FOOD SECURITY & FOOD SAFETY

Hear Jane Grueber talking about where her enthusiasm for urban gardening came from. Jane grew up in the Czech Republic and as a young child lived through the experience of her entire community’s food supply being poisoned by the Chernobyl disaster. Two months after the nuclear disaster, her mother courageously defected with Jane and her brother as refugees, eventually immigrating to Canada, where food insecurity was very much their reality, as they lived in poverty, despite all working to do what they could to keep food on the table.

Appreciating the realities and privilege of clean food, Jane has embraced the vision to follow her heart to make a difference for future generations and the planet for abundant, accessible and healthy food for all, starting with an urban garden in her own front yard.

“Rather than fighting the world we reject, let’s use our knowledge, skills, insights, principle and techniques to create the world we do want.” ~ Bill Mollison

RETHINKING URBAN GARDEN INITIATIVES

INNOVATIVE URBAN GARDEN PROJECTS

After Eyoala Baker talks about the impact of sharing joy, hear Jane Grueber talking about empowering grass-roots urban garden initiatives.

About Jane Grueber: Urban Garden Revolutionary

Jane Grueber is an urban gardener, a mother and a speech-language pathologist who is passionate about food security and food safety. Her passion lies in advocating for food security – That all people, at all times, have access to nutritious, safe, personally acceptable and culturally appropriate food obtained through normal food distribution channels.

Food Security is “making sure that your neighbor is fed.”

~Carolyn Herriot, author and Vancouver Island farmer

Her life experiences have taken her down a path she never expected. As a child she experienced food security and safety issues in Eastern Europe particularly following the Chernobyl Nuclear accident in April 1986, as an immigrant to Canada, and later as a professional working with children in disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Alberta.

Jane loves all things sustainable, local and organic. She is a nature enthusiast, urban gardener, photographer, writer and hiker. Her passion lies in connecting and reconnecting people with the power of nature and mother earth. She shares the things she is passionate about regularly on her blog Recipes of My Home. You can find her latest musings, projects, and plant-based recipes at janegrueber.com.

“Although the problems are increasingly complex, the solutions remain embarrassingly simple – The only ethical decision is to take responsibility for our own existence, and that of our children” ~ Bill Mollison

Urban Front Yard Farm Project

Jane is about to begin her Urban Front Yard Farm project. Her goal for this year is to figure out how much food can be grown in a 9 by 40 foot (360 square foot) yard over a 22 week growing season, whether it can feed her family and neighbours as well as save the family some money in the process.

Nature Photography…

With her nature photography, Jane has also begun creating gorgeous mood-inspiring short movies, celebrating her love of the planet. With many more on the way, she has recently debuted her first project, “The Power of Nature: A Living Island Series, Volume 1” (see below). Kindergarten teachers have begun using the movie as a soothing and calming classroom tool that the children love.
